'07 Icestorm aftermath

Well CU still doesn't have electric citywide and peoples nerves are starting to fray. I will commend all those that are working diligently to get power back on, the phone lines restored and the grocery store shelves restocked.

The quesion remains however what has anyone learned??

Government can't rescue those that haven't done anything for themselves even though they will complain about the slow responce. I listen in awe as people beg and plead to have power restored to their houses and business. I can empathise, but we live in an area prone to ice storms, tornadoes, torrential rains and flooding.

Why aren't people more SELF RELIANT??

In some repects I can say government caused or allowed some of this to occur. I don't see any alternative means of power generating on any house including my own. Windmills, solar power, propane or any means to have some semblence of livelihood in time of need.
This storm showed that most people in this area aren't prepared to go without for any long duration. NO food storage, NO water stored, NO means to survive a long term condition.

The message this should send is that people need to be prepared for anything anytime, I'm afraid by the time power is restored a grearter percentage of those in the Midwest will continue on as most by forgetting what mother nature can cause.

Location in the U.S. makes NO difference because on the west coast were earthquakes are prevelant people aren't prepared for long term needs, as with most of the nation.

One must ask themselves are you prepared with at least a weeks worth of food and water just in case?
Can you survive a long term catastrophic event if government can't get to you?
If your prepared what can you do to mkae sure all you neighbors and friends are prepared to survive??
Keep at least a half tank of gas at all times, store 10 gallons if possible

A few good areas to learn how to become prepared are as follows

Be prepared and don't become reliant upon government services or corporate companies in order for your survival.

Tired of the hype

It has only been 24 hours or so and already I'm tired of the African American angle to the SuperBowl. Just like with Doug Williams of the Washington Redskins this angle is getting quite thin. After all it was MLK which said the following

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character".

"I have a dream today".

Well I have a dream as well and that is for the media to stop playing the race card anytime an African American succeeds to do anything in this country. I look to people like Herman Cain, Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell and thousands of other which have suceeded despite the notion that racism exist in this nation. people like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Spike Lee have used the color of their skin to promote a feeling of being inferior somehow because the pigment in there skin is different.

Tony Dungy and Marvin Lewis didn't become successful because they are "black" they became successful because they worked their tail offs to get where they are. I seem to recall head coaches by the name of Art Shell and Denny Green which have achieved success to some level however neither have taken their respective teams to the big game. Should we then remark because they are African American that they were supposed to FAIL??
I don't believe so, so why all the hype?? So the media has something to talk about leading up to the game besides the normal hoopla.

Is Peyton Manning one of the best to ever play the game at his position?? Whether he loses the game or wins makes NO difference because he will be voted into the HoF on the first ballot after he retires, NO DOUBT... The man has one of the best down field presences in modern day football, however I believe he falls short of Tom Brady in greatness.
Had New England receivers held onto the ball I believe Mr Brady would be going for number 4 in 6 years, however it was not meant to be.

Media, you have a job to do and to keep reminding us that the head coached are African American isn't one of them. I just like many could careless what color skin the head coach has. I wonder if an all white player NBA team made it to the finals if the coverage would be the same??
Silly me that isn't going to happen as the team would be required to field a minority of some sort because it is the LAW. Although the LAW probably needed to be passed in order to bring about some sort of diversity, it should've been passed and government held accountable not the private sector.

No matter what you think that's the common sense approach.
